Day #12 - 08/07/14
Job: Department of Transportation Special Projects Paving Crew
Experience: Today's job was brought to you by the fine people of the Baltimore City DOT. As part of a special paving project on the street that Billie Holliday grew up on the Baltimore City DOT and the Upper Fells Point neighborhood association are completing a Belgian Stone paving project.
So I was lucky enough to join one of the community organizers today in hunting for belgian stones at the DOT's facility off Rt 40.
When I say back breaking work I am not mincing my words. We picked up the truck, wheel barrow and shovels in the morning and headed to the job site. It was a nice day thankfully, but the mountain we had to climb to access the stones was challenging to say the least. Once into the actual grunt work it was not really that bad. Before I knew it we had loaded at least 60 stones (each weighing in around 10 lbs each) into the flat bed truck.
After about an hour of so of hauling the stones they were transported to the street where they will be laid. In the meantime they were being stored in a alley right next to the house Billie Holliday lived in as a child.
What I learned:
Special paving projects can be requested by residents. Once approved the project runs its course. Since this is an on-going project and they need about 1,000 stones there is still more work to do. But once the final project is completed I will be sure to post those pictures. In the mean time enjoy the video and the pics of my day on the job.
Rating:
Manual labor is NOT my cup of tea but hauling stones definitely gave my arms a good work out! SO there's that! :)
