I joined a yahoo group called Freecycle.org They have local groups for any major city in the USA. When I joined I wasnt sure what I would Offer or if I would even find a use for the group. But I was interested in the whole concept of giving away unwated things to those that do want them and would take them off your hands. Granted we have sites like eBay but those things are used to make a profit and often times people are simply reselling something they bought elsewhere.
The difference with this freecycle.org site is that the items are being offered for free and they dont end up in the LANDFILLS of america. SO its just one more step of trying to go GREEN and being econconscious.
Well today I was cleaning out the shed in the back yard and realized I have items I would like to discard but dont want to throw away. Well with in minutes of posting 7-10 items on the group site I received email messages of people wanting my items.
After some back and forth emails I ended up giving away an old rocking chair and ottoman that my mom gave me when I was younger. I got a LOT of emails regarding this item.
I finally managed to get one lady who had two little kids that was interested in the item to come by and pick it up. It was neat to be able to give something away that her little kids would be able to use for a long time to come. And it didnt cost us anything except a little time and maybe some gas money to drive out to my house. But the feeling alone of saying here you go and thank you was enough to make me want to give MORE of my stuff away.
I just gave away some bar stools and a Compaq flat panel monitor too. All things that are still in working order but I no longer want. WHERE were these sites when I was a POOR HS and College student? LOL
I recommend you check out your local www.freecycle.org site and see if you too can get involved. Think of it as a virtual garage sale with out the sale!
